Get to know Sam!

Sam James is a Research Assistant for OPTIC Lab projects on encouraging team collaboration in a virtual classroom environment. She earned her B.A. and Master’s in Communication Studies from the University of Alabama and is working toward her Ph.D. in Organizational Communication and Technology. Sam is passionate about affect and technology in organizing; most of her work centers around the emotional tug that drives people to rally for a cause on a global (& virtual) scale. Outside of UT, Sam is part of Austin Rowing Club and is constantly trying to convince her friends to form an academic acapella group.

Get to know courtney!

Courtney J. Powers, M.A. is currently a doctoral student at the University of Texas at Austin, studying Organizational Communication and Technology. Her research focuses on the construction and management of communicative boundaries, which she explores through a variety of topics within organizational communication, including cybervetting and hiring, family businesses, training and development, social media, and conflict management. Currently, Courtney is working on her dissertation, which explores how job seekers manage their communicative boundaries and privacy on social networking sites in the age of cybervetting. Outside of the OPTIC Lab, Courtney is an active member of the academic and graduate community as the instructor for the Organizational Communication course, Center for Health Communication Doctoral Fellow, and Past President of the Communication Studies Graduate Community (CommSGC). Prior to starting at UT, Courtney earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and Psychology, before going on to earn her Master’s degree in Communication Studies at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Outside of school, Courtney is very involved in her family’s business, performing human resources, marketing, and accounting responsibilities, and enjoys spending her free time with her beloved dog, Noel.

Get to know Cassidy Better!

Cassidy is entering the third year of her Ph.D. program in the Communication Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin. She is in the Organizational Communication and Technology division. Her current research interests are in health communication, specifically around how healthcare providers can improve women’s health through communication and technology. She has enjoyed working with Dr. Keri Stephens and the other graduate students in the lab. At UT Austin, she also serves as the Co-President of the Graduate Communication Association (GCA) and Secretary/Treasurer of Graduate Women in Communication (GWIC). She is originally from Southwest Louisiana. She has a master’s degree in communication from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a triple specialization in organizational communication, interpersonal communication, and public relations. Cassidy lives in Manor, TX with her husband and daughter.

Get to know Anastazja Better!

Anastazja Harris is the Lab Manager for OPTIC Lab and the Lead Graduate Research Assistant for an NSF-funded research project on human-AI teaming and COVID-19 response. Through this work, she has enjoyed being able to work with colleagues on exciting research projects that have real impacts on communities. Anastazja is currently working on her dissertation project that addresses how artificial intelligence is being incorporated into organizational hiring processes and the impact this has on hiring decisions. She is also interested in studying team communication, human-machine communication, and career studies. Outside of the OPTIC Lab, Anastazja is also an active member of the academic and graduate community as the instructor for the Team-Based Communication course; Past President of the Communication Studies Graduate Community (CommSGC); and a board member on the Tenant Advisory Board for UT Graduate Housing. Before coming to the University of Texas at Austin, Anastazja earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a second major in Interpersonal/Organizational Communication at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her free time, she likes (trying) to cook new recipes, searching for the best local restaurants, playing video games, and singing. 

Get to know Kendall better!

Kendall Tich, M.A. is a current Ph.D. student in Organizational Communication and Technology at The University of Texas at Austin. She is interested in how organizing happens during crises and disasters, and how organizations prepare for, respond to, and communicate around crises. Prior to beginning her Ph.D., Kendall worked at a global, integrated communications agency in San Francisco, supporting public relations and marketing workstreams in the healthcare space – she still maintains a part-time role at the agency in internal communications and operations. Kendall grew up across the U.S., culminating in an ExPat experience in Hong Kong before moving to San Diego for her B.A. at the University of San Diego, followed by her M.A. at the University of Minnesota. In her free time, Kendall enjoys traveling, hiking, skiing, and exploring Austin.

Get to know Nancy better!

Nancy Carlson, M.A. is a doctoral student studying Organizational Communication and Technology. As a member of the OPTIC Lab, she is involved in various projects that center around flood education and preparedness, and communities as decision-makers in response to chronic stressors. Her current research interests focus on disaster preparedness and risk communication, more specifically in underrepresented and vulnerable communities. Prior to her arrival at UT, she earned her B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Disaster Studies from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Outside of her role as a student and scholar, Nancy enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. She also enjoys listening to audiobooks, spending time outdoors playing with her dogs, and tending to her plants and chickens. 

Get to know Yifan Better!

Yifan Xu is a current Ph.D. student in Organizational Communication and Technology at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to UT she studied at Murray State and Texas State. Yifan has a background in veterinary science. She lived and worked in San Franciscos for biotech companies. However, she has pivoted towards studying communication. She is interested in health communication and the integration of technology into communication processes. Outside of academics, Yifan loves to ride horses, spend time outdoors, and paint.

Get to know KARIM better!

Karim Nader is a Research Assistant working on the Human-AI Teaming for COVID-19 Response project. He got his B.A. from Columbia University in mathematics and philosophy. He briefly worked in the legal field before starting his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin and works mainly in the ethics of information and technology. His dissertation will look at the ethics of virtual actions. He is very interested in ethics in imaginative contexts and how that relates to video games and art: is it ever wrong to imagine, dream or fantasize about something? and if so, is it ever wrong to watch a certain movie, or enjoy a kind of video game? Karim is also interested in algorithmic justice and feminist philosophy. In his free time, he practices judo and plays video games. He has a very sweet cat, Sev, who likes to crash his Zoom calls.

Roth is an alum OpticLab and is now an Assistant Professor in The School of Communication at Illinois State University. The common thread running through his various research projects is a focus on how communication facilitates or constrains organizing processes among loosely structured collective.

Get to know brett better!

Brett Robertson is an alum of OpticLab and is now an Assistant Professor in The School of Journalism and Mass Communications, College of Information and Communications at The University of South Carolina. He served as the lead graduate researcher on a National Science Foundation grant (NSF#1760453: The Changing Nature of “Calls” for Help with Hurricane Harvey: Comparing 9-1-1 and Social Media). His research interests center at the intersection of organizational and risk communication. He focuses on how organizations prepare for natural disasters and how communication facilitates organizing processes in the disaster context. He also studies the relationship between technology use, specifically social and mobile media, and organizational practices.

He was an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and Strategic Communication at Marquette University. As a part of the Diederich College of Communication, As a self-proclaimed “pracademic,” his research follows two primary foci: (1) the interplay of normative rules and the use of information communication technologies (ICTs) in organizations, and (2) how entrepreneurs and small business owners interact with internal and external stakeholders in the process of organizational growth.
