Think back to when you were about to graduate from college, or perhaps you’re dreaming about that day to come. You were probably looking forward to getting a job, and with that came some much-needed cutting-edge technologies. That’s what I’ve observed while collecting six years of data from students in my internship classes at UT Austin. Not only do many of them need new laptop computers as they graduate, but some of them decided to skip that costly accessory while in college, and have done most of their work on a mobile device with a tiny screen. Just because today’s new college graduates have grown up with mobile technologies doesn’t mean that they always know how to use them productively in the workplace. I’m also concerned about disparity, because many of these students won’t be able to afford the tools they need to start their careers successfully. I hope this chapter encourages people working in IT and HR to consider new graduates’ needs while developing future BYOD policies.
